Wheel spacers
The Wheel spacers are components that are mounted between the wheel hub and the rim in order to increase the distance between the wheels.
They are installed for many reasons, including:
- improve vehicle stability and road holding,
- increase the roadway,
- have a more aggressive appearance,
- allow the assembly of wheels of different dimensions or with a different offset (the distance between the wheel hub where the rims rest and the center of the wheel).
It is important to choose the wheel spacers correctly, based on the size of the wheels and the distance from the fender of the vehicle.
It starts from
a minimum thickness of 5 mm – up to a
maximum of 30 mm. They are produced with quality aluminum only (Ergal 7075-O or Ergal 7075-T6) and are subjected to an antioxidant treatment.
What types of spacers are there?
The Simoni Racing range features a vast choice of these components:
-
Spacers: they are the thinnest, maximum 5 mm. They don’t require specific fasteners for installation.
-
Spacers with collar: they vary from 10mm to 20mm thick. For installation it will be necessary to use specific bolts; usually, the excess length will be equal to half of the spacer. Spacers with collars are generally considered a better choice than spacers without collars, as they improve wheel precision and stability and reduce the risk of problems such as vibration or damage to vehicle components.
-
Double bolts: they are the widest on the market (dimensions variable between 25 and 35 mm). They consist of 2 sets of bolts. One set secures the spacer to the hub, the second set secures the spacer to the wheel. These spacers can be mounted mainly on off-road vehicles, SUV and Pick Up.
How to choose the right size?
In order to choose the right size of wheel spacers it is important to carry out these steps:
- Place the car on a straight surface
- Measure the available space between the fender and the tire shoulder of all 4 wheels
- Keep a gap of few millimeters between the fender and the tire shoulder
- Check the type of rim drilling
- Check the diameter of the wheel hub
- Check the depth of the wheel hub
- Check if the original bolts have a conical or spherical head
In general, to choose the right size of wheel spacers, it is advisable to consult an expert or a qualified mechanic who can provide advice on choosing the most suitable spacers for your needs.
How to install the spacers?
Installing the spacers is a simple operation but requires attention and precision.
Here is a general guide on how to install spacers:
- Park the car on a straight surface and lift it with special supports to remove the wheels.
- Remove the dirt from the wheel hub with sandpaper and cleaners such as white spirit or degreaser.
- Position the spacer onto the wheel hub shaft, making sure that the centering collar is positioned correctly in the hole of the hub.
- Place the wheel on the spacer and secure with the bolts provided.
- Repeat the steps illustrated above on the other three wheels.
- Road test: do a low speed road test to verify that the spacers are installed correctly and that there are no vibrations or other problems.
